ABCD 2 earns Rs 14.3 crore on first day, breaks box office record of 2015

Varun Dhawan will no longer just be a budding star after this. His latest release ABCD 2 has grossed the highest opening day collection in the domestic market in 2015 so far.
The dance drama, which pairs Varun with Shraddha Kapoor for the first time, raked in Rs 14.3 crore on day one, making it a clear winner ahead of the Akshay Kumar biggie Gabbar Is Back. Akshay's film, with a domestic day-one haul of Rs 13.05 crore, was holding the first-day record for 2015 till now.

The occupancy rate in most shows all over India has been around 50 per cent, which again is the highest on day one for any Bollywood film this year. Interestingly, ABCD 2 was released across just 2,500 screens, far lesser than the average screen count of around 4,000 that films flaunting top stars normally get.

The absence of any other major Bollywood release at this point is an advantage that the Remo D'Souza-directed film will get. What also works for the film is that it is a sequel to ABCD: Any Body Can Dance, which became a surprise hit in 2013. Smart marketing of its excellent dance sequences, primarily featuring Varun, Shraddha and Prabhu Deva, raised curiosity that in turn drew the crowds.
Industry sources believe collections will only rise on Sunday and the film could see an opening weekend worth anything between Rs 45-50 crore. ABCD 2 has been lavishly shot in Mumbai and Las Vegas, riding a budget of around `89 crore. Trade experts expect it to recover costs and make profits. Some even expect a blockbuster.

"Just watched #ABCD2... its a bonafide blockbuster!! The dancing is on another level altogether!!!! The climax had me clapping in my seat!!! (sic)" tweeted @karanjohar.

Notably, the film opened strong even in Mumbai despite the heavy rains, earning a healthy Rs 5.5 crore. Reports coming in from Delhi-NCR, Uttar Pradesh, Gujarat, Rajasthan, Punjab and Haryana are also positive.

Meanwhile, ABCD 2 continues to floor Bollywood, with the celebs who have seen the film raving about it.
"If u love to dance u cant miss #ABCD2. If u dont love to dance, even then u cant miss it! Vd, shraddha, lauren n all the dancers r outstanding!! (sic)" wrote @sonakshisinha, while Arjun Kapoor (@arjunk26) tweeted, "Completely blown away by the amazing energy of the movie #ABCD2... @ShraddhaKapoor, just one word after watching #ABCD2! Shraddha-struck!(sic)."
