Shabana Azmi speaks in favour of A.R. Rahman

A Mumbai-based Sunni Muslim group has issued a Fatwa against celebrated Iranian filmmaker Majid Majidi and Indian music composer A R Rahman. The Fatwa, issued by Raza Academy, demands that Muslims reject acclaimed filmmaker Majidi's film titled Muhammad: Messenger of God — first of the trilogy on the life of Prophet Mohammad. The group had also written to Home Minister Rajnath Singh and Maharashtra Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis, seeking a ban on Iranian filmmaker's film.

In the fatwa, they cite as the reason the Prophet's word that no visual or picture of him be created or kept. The Fatwa claims the film makes a mockery of Islam, and professional actors, including some non-Muslims, have been cast in the key roles. The Fatwa adds that the Muslims working on the film, especially Majidi and Rahman, have thus committed sacrilege and will have to read the 'Kalma' again and also solemnise their marriage again.

The Fatwa against A.R. Rahman has lead to outrage amongst his fans in the country. Actress Shabana Azmi has recently spoken in favour of the Oscar winning composer. Talking about the fatwa that has been issued against A.R. Rahman, Shabana was quoted as saying that a Fatwa can only be issued by a 'mufti' in response to a question raised by a person or a group, she further added that the mufti cannot issue a Fatwa suo moto and neither can he impose it. The Raza Academy has no locus standi and its self-appointed stance of speaking for all Muslims has no takers, she said.
