Mama's Boys review: Delhi Belly writer gives Mahabharata a post-modern twist

Before Akshat Verma has his acid test on the big screen with Kala Kanti, his feature film directorial debut with Saif Ali Khan, he gives us a short film - Mama's Boys. Here's our review.

Akshat Verma WAS missed! The writer emerged as a fresh, energetic and amazingly talented voice among Bollywood screenwriters in 2011 when Delhi Belly released. Here was a new writer who spoke to the viral-video generation, and, perhaps, the kind of irreverant humour that Delhi Belly had, and the success the film got, has something to do with the kind of internet comedy culture prevalent in India today.

However, Akshat had been missing from action since Delhi Belly. At present, he is making Kala Kanti, his first feature film as a director, with Saif Ali Khan. But before that, we get a glimpse of what he can deliver as a writer-director, in the YouTube short film Mama's Boys.

The film takes on Mahabharata's characters - the Pandavas, Draupadi, Kunti and Shakuni mama and puts them in a contemporary, urban setting. Arjun (Amol Parashar) brings Draupadi (Aditi Rao Hydari) and introduces her to mother Kunti (Neena Gupta), "Ma, Draupadi...Draupadi, meet ma." Kunti , as the story goes, orders Arjun to 'share' Draupadi with his four brothers.
The rest of the short film is about Arjun coming to terms with his bros sharing what is 'rightfully' his.
Mama's Boys is, well, yet another addition to the many professionally produced internet comedy videos these days. The film does not break any new ground or crack any new jokes you have not heard before. It's basically Akshat having a lot of fun with the actors, who are, by the way, excellent in their roles, particularly, Aditi Rao Hydari, Arunoday Singh as Bhim (After Main Tera Hero and Mohenjo Daro, he seems to have mastered the dumb gym rat role), and Vivaan Shah and Jim Sarbh as Nakul and Sehdev.
But the star of the film, definitely, is late Razak Khan, who plays Shakuni mama. God, to see him play Shakuni...if there's one reason to devote sixteen minutes of your day to Mama's Boys, this should be it.
