Mumbai: Matching his popularity on and off the cricket field, the just released biopic of star player M S Dhoni made Rs 21 crore on opening day, according to the movie's producers.
Actor Sushant Singh Rajput is playing the title role in "MS Dhoni: The Untold Story", helmed by Neeraj Pandey. Produced by Fox Star Studios and Arun Pandey, the film released yesterday in over 4,500 screens in India.
The opening day collection for the biopic was Rs 21.30 crore in India, and according to a press note issued here, the film is the biggest non-festive opener of all time and is the biggest opener for biopic genre in the country.
"Like Shah Rukh Khan and Salman Khan, Dhoni, too, enjoys a huge fan following thanks to his great cricketing career. This is one of the main reasons the film has clicked with the audience," film exhibitor Akshaye Rathi told .
The film stars Kiara Advani as Dhoni's wife Sakshi besides Disha Patani, Anupam Kher and Bhumika Chawla.
"We thank India for this overwhelming love for the biopic on Mahendra Singh Dhoni's life. He is the son of the soil and its absolutely amazing to see we have lived up to the expectations of the cricket fans, his fans and the movie-going audience," said Vijay Singh, CEO of Fox Star Studios.
