High on dark humour and good performances, Saheb Biwi Aur Gangster 3 fails in the thrill department
The Saheb Biwi Aur Gangster franchise is totally unlike the other big budget hard-core commercial franchise films of Bollywood. In the world of bankrupt royalty that still retains its pride, deceit and treachery rules the roost. The third film of the series releases today. It is bigger than the first two films in terms of star cast. Sanjay Dutt and Chitrangda Singh join the gang here. If I had to put it mildly, it is a film about one-upmanship between a devious Biwi (Madhavi Devi) and her equally cunning spouse, Aditya Pratap played Jimmy Sheirgill. The two love to hate each other. Enter in Sanjay Dutt (Kunwar Uday Pratap) who is another royal cum former gangster cum restaurateur and Chitrangda Singh his love interest, Suhani. Veteran actress Nafisa Ali has a cameo as Sanjay’s mom while Kabir Bedi plays his father.
What is it about…
We see that Madhavi Devi (Mahie Gill) has now become a Member of Parliament and is a prolific wheeler dealer. Aditya Pratap’s (Jimmy Sheirgill)’s second wife Ranjana (Soha Ali Khan) has become an alcoholic. Madhavi tries her best to keep Aditya Pratap behind the bars but he secures bail with help from his loyal aide Kanhaiya (Deepraj Rana) and his daughter, who also believes in wafadari. Post his release, he vows to destroy Madhavi but a wild night changes equations between them. The increasingly insecure Biwi seeks help from Uday Pratap (Sanjay Dutt) to eliminate her husband and indulges in her usual double-crossing. Uday Pratap has his own back-story and set of powerful enemies. Who will win this time? Will Saheb or Biwi die in their deadly games? Watch the film to find out…
What’s hot
Jimmy Sheirgill’s performance is simply awesome. Whether it is cocking a snook at his insecure Biwi or indulging in a banter with Uday Pratap, he is in wonderful form. He looks handsome in the Raghavendra Rathore creations too. Giving him tough competition in the acting department is Mahie Gill. Some of the best scenes are written for these two actors. The first half belongs to Mahie and Jimmy takes over post interval. Tigmanshu Dhulia has written the dialogues and many of them make you chuckle. The dark humour associated with the franchise is present throughout the film. Chitrangda Singh has a small role but shines as the only positive madly in love character. Saheb Biwi Aur Gangster picks up pace post interval but the climax is partly tense and partly confusing.
What’s not
The first half of the film is somewhat of a drag. Tigmanshu Dhulia introduces Sanjay Dutt as the Baba. We guess the makers wanted to make this film more massy and hence got Dutt on board. Though he is a former gangster, his character is far more positive than that of Saheb or Biwi. Sadly, he looks browbeaten in the second half and that won’t appeal to Dutt’s fans. There are a couple of songs with Dutt that are absolutely unnecessary. Chitrangda and he shine in their scenes though. The climax that unravels over a game of Russian roulette has a few glaring loopholes. Will there be a fourth film in the franchise? We guess so…
Verdict
If you love dark humour, the film is a decent one time watch. Mahie and Jimmy are a joy to watch onscreen. However, do not expect a very taut and edgy thrilling story.
