Chhapaak vs Tanhaji to Sooryavanshi vs Inshallah: It's clash of the titans at box office in 2020

That there are only 52 Fridays in a year and even fewer holidays for filmmakers to cash in on the opening weekend, has been said ad nauseum. Not surprising then, big-ticket films book festivals and prominent national holidays for their release dates merely on the basis of their announcement. The latest is InshaAllah, which sees Salman Khan and Sanjay Leela Bhansali collaborate after 12 years since the superstar played a pivotal role in the auteur filmmaker’s Saawariya (2007). The hatke love story, which also stars Alia Bhatt, has recently been confirmed for Eid 2020.

While Salman had previously spoken about his new project with SLB being readied as his next big festive outing, the numbers garnered by his Eid 2019 film, Bharat, only made him and his filmmaker friend reiterate their date two days ago. They weren’t to be deterred by the fact that the day has already been taken by Akshay Kumar, Rohit Shetty and Karan Johar for their supercop film, Sooryavanshi. After Hrs has already told you about the meeting that reportedly took place between Salman and Akshay to try and avoid the clash. Last heard, the stalemate continues. It remains to be seen whether this BO face-off will take place next Eid or will one of the two avoid it. Meanwhile, as of now, a number of 2020’s prominent dates will see more than one movie opening in cinemas. Starting from January 10 when Ajay Devgn’s historical drama Tanhaji: The Unsung Warrior releases along with Deepika Padukone’s maiden production, Chhapaak, to Christmas that will see Aamir Khan’s Lal Singh Chaddha taking on Luv Ranjan’s Ajay and Ranbir Kapoor-starrer.

Surprisingly, next year’s Diwali hasn’t been taken yet — the Bollywood calendar doesn’t show any movie releasing on November 13, which marks the commencement of the festival with Dhanteras. But we can be sure a major star project will soon claim this date. And if two filmmakers decide to come out with their respective movies, then we can expect some fireworks on Diwali 2020.
