Shahid Kapoor and Kiara Advani are on cloud nine as their recently released film Kabir Singh has struck gold at the box office on its opening day. Kabir Singh, an official remake of Telugu film Arjun Reddy, has minted Rs 20.21 on Friday, thus becoming the biggest opener of Shahid's career so far. An elated Shahid took to Instagram to thank his fans for their "overwhelming love."

A few hours after the figures of Kabir Singh first day collection came out, Shahid Kapoor thanked his fans for showering him with love.

Shahid shared a poster of Kabir Singh and wrote, "Thank you for the overwhelming love. #kabirsingh."

He was joined by his Kabir Singh co-star Kiara Advani in expressing gratitude over the overwhelming response.

Kiara, too, shared the same poster and wrote, "Thankyouuuuuuuu sooooooooooo much for all the love. (sic)"

Released in 3123 screens across India, Kabir Singh has got a bumper opening at the box office. In fact, the opening day collection of Kabir Singh has surpassed the first day collection of Shahid's Padmaavat (Rs 19 crore).

While Shahid and Kiara fans are thronging the theatres in large numbers, the film has been panned by critics.

India Today critic Ananya Bhattacharya slammed Kabir Singh for glamourising misogyny. Giving the film 1.5 out of 5 stars, she wrote, "Kabir Singh spends 120 minutes of its 154 in showing Kabir either drinking or drunk or snorting cocaine or needling in morphine or fighting with people or, slapping his girlfriend or screaming at her. Or making out. In the remaining 24 minutes, his repentance is done with, and we all go home with a happy ending. If you think it is okay, if you think it is justified because 'movie hai yaar, it's not real life', you are part of the problem. Misogyny is not cool. Neither is Kabir Singh."

Kabir Singh revolves around a medical student who goes down the road of self-destruction after his girlfriend marries someone else.
