Time and again we have seen older actors romancing younger heroines on screen, in Bollywood movies. Take for instance even with Dabangg 3, a 53-year old Salman Khan is seen romancing a 21-year old Saiee Manjrekar and it isn't the first time he or several other actors have been paired opposite an actress as young as Saiee. Why is it never the other way round? Why has an older actress never been romantically paired opposite a younger hero in movies? Is it because actresses don't wish to be paired opposite younger heroes or are there no stories that demand one such pairing?
Sonakshi Sinha, who plays an equally pivotal role in Salman's Dabangg franchise, was recently quizzed about this very mindset of how it's okay if older actors romance younger heroines but never vice versa and Sonakshi was left rather perplexed. This happened in interaction with The Quint. The reporter made up a random pairing of Madhuri Dixit and Ishaan Khatter for reference and asked Sonakshi about the age gap being dealt in Bollywood with reference to Salman romancing Saee in Dabangg 3 and Sonakshi said, "Would you want to see a Madhuri Dixit romance a Ishaan Khatter? I don't know...that's a bit odd."
The reporter then retorted, "Why is it not odd when a Salman khan is romancing a 21-year old but why is it odd when a Madhuri Dixit is romancing Ishaan Khatter? And Sonakshi said, "I don't know actually. I never thought of it that way. I think you should ask him (Salman Khan) only on what is he eating or what is he doing to keep looking so young and keep romancing the younger girls with every film. I actually haven't (thought about this) because for me, well it's a job right and hats off to him for having sustained a career for so long in the industry and you know, still working with as much gusto as he did, initially. And I think it's great to have achieved something like that. So if you have a problem with it then you should go and ask him."
The reporter refused to budge and further went on to say, "No we don't have a problem with it. We have a problem with women not doing it, people are not accepting women doing the same thing. To which, Sonakshi summed it up saying, "I don't know if I was at an age of 50, I would feel odd romancing a guy who is 22-years old. So that's a personal opinion. I don't know, I mean, it's possible but it has happened right? There has been a film where there was somebody....but also then, it wasn't accepted. I don't think that film did well at all. So which is audiences' prerogative, right? The audience is not accepting something which a man does is okay to do with a younger person but when a woman does it, it's not accepted. That just shows what kind of a country we live in."
What do you have to say about Sonakshi's point of view? As an audience, would you wish to see an older actress romance a younger hero? Comment below and keep watching this space for more updates.
