Lupita Nyong’o and Joseph Quinn in 'A Quiet Place: Day One' |
The June movie week is wrapping up on a high note, with 'A Quiet Place: Day One' breaking records as the latest film to do so. Sadly, Kevin Costner's big-budget 'Horizon: An American Saga' isn't having the same luck.
Paramount's prequel 'A Quiet Place: Day One' is neck-and-neck with Pixar's top-grossing 'Inside Out 2' for the weekend top spot, while Kevin Costner's expensive Western 'Horizon: An American Saga' is falling behind.
Box Office: 'A Quiet Place' Prequel Makes Loud Entrance With Franchise-Best $6.8M in Previews; 'Horizon' Earns Meek $800k
The third 'A Quiet Place' movie took the lead Friday with an estimated $22.5 million, setting itself up for a debut of $53 million to $55 million, which would be the franchise's best three-day total. Going into the weekend, the sci-fi horror thriller was expected to open to $40 million or more, considering it's the first time John Krasinski didn't direct and Emily Blunt didn't star.
Instead, Michael Sarnoski (Pig) took over the reins for 'Day One,' based on a story he and Krasinski came up with. The film stars Lupita Nyong’o and Joseph Quinn in a $70 million project, which has received generally good reviews and a B+ CinemaScore, a solid grade for a horror movie. The 18-to-24 crowd and a diverse audience are driving the film's success, and it's also taking over many IMAX and premium large-format screens from 'Inside Out 2,' which is now in its third weekend.
The Krasinski-directed 'A Quiet Place' was a sleeper hit at the 2018 box office, opening to $50 million despite having almost no dialogue. 'A Quiet Place: Part II,' released over Memorial Day in 2021, had a four-day holiday gross of $57 million, including $47 million for the three-day weekend.
'Day One' is keeping the June box office bounce going, which was kicked off by 'Bad Boys: Ride or Die' and solidified by 'Inside Out 2,' which is on track to become the first film since Barbie almost a year ago to hit $1 billion worldwide. It's also one of the top 10 highest-grossing animated films of all time, not adjusted for inflation.
'Inside Out 2' grossed an estimated $17 million on Friday for a weekend haul in the $55 million to $59 million range.
Horizon is definitely the big talk of the weekend, especially since Costner left his high-paying job on Taylor Sheridan's popular show Yellowstone and spent a ton of his own cash to make his dream project come true with four Western movies.
Box Office Prediction: "Inside Out 2" to Pass $1 Billion While "Quiet Place 3" and "Horizon" Expect to Soar in June
The movie is expected to make $11 million right off the bat, which is a bit of a worry for a three-hour film that cost $100 million to make. Even though a lot of movie experts think it'll do well in the Midwest, where it's not getting great reviews from critics or a good B- CinemaScore won't help either.
Warners decided to handle and promote the movie for a fee in the U.S. Costner has been working hard to get the word out, putting in $38 million of his own money to cover most of the marketing costs, and two unknown investors also put some money into it. The rest of the money came from selling overseas movie rights with the help of a sales company K5 International, which showed the movie at the Cannes Film Festival. (Horizon is hitting theaters in many places this weekend.)
'A Quiet Place: Day One' Director Michael Sarnoski was interviewed exclusively about the cat.
Horizon: An American Saga: Chapter Two is hitting theaters soon, on Aug. 16, in what's being called one of the most unique movie distribution deals in Hollywood history.
