The picture may be titled 'Dune: Messiah,' but the filmmaker has previously claimed that he will do something else before returning to that realm.

Denis Villeneuve's next film is set for a holiday release, albeit it is unclear what it will be.

Warner Bros. revealed on Friday that the filmmaker's next "event film" will be released in theatres on December 18, 2026, and will be produced by Legendary Entertainment, which also produces his Dune films.

Plot details have not been revealed, although Villeneuve, who most recently directed Dune: Part Two, has previously declared that a third Dune picture will not be his next project. He does have a nuclear war film signed up at Legendary, but sources claim Villeneuve may have changed his mind and is returning his focus to Dune. Legendary couldn't be reached for comment.Warner Bros. also announced that an untitled film in Legendary Pictures' MonsterVerse franchise will be released in theatres on March 26, 2027. In a related move, a film project from Locksmith Animation that was previously set for that day has been pulled from the studio's schedule. Grant Sputore takes over as director of the latest MonsterVerse film, succeeding Adam Wingard.

Dune: Part Two reached theatres in March and has grossed more than $700 million worldwide. The film, which stars Timothée Chalamet, Zendaya, Rebecca Ferguson, and Austin Butler, is based on the work of author Frank Herbert and follows Paul Atreides (Chalamet) as he works with Chani (Zendaya) and the Fremen in the aftermath of his family's tragedy.During an interview with The Hollywood Reporter around the time of the Dune sequel's release, Villeneuve was coy about what he could be working on next, stating that he had four projects on the go. He stated that any delay in beginning work on adapting Hebert's 1969 novel Dune Messiah for a third film would be "about making sure that I have the right screenplay."

Villeneuve stated at the time that he may prefer to embark on a more time-sensitive project "before tackling Dune Messiah."

The most recent addition in the MonsterVerse series is Godzilla x Kong: The New Empire, directed by Wingard, which opened in late March and grossed $567 million worldwide.
