Ryan Reynolds reveals the original Deadpool 3 concept was a $5 million road movie with 'no special effects'.

Ryan Reynolds said he never envisaged portraying Deadpool again after Disney and Fox merged, but he did consider making a road movie.

Ryan Reynolds reflected on the origins of Shawn Levy's buddy superhero film Deadpool & Wolverine ahead of its release. In an interview with Entertainment Weekly, Ryan said that the threequel's original premise was a short road movie.

What Ryan said

"It was literally a $5 or $6 million budget with no special effects." It was just a talkie-talkie road journey with myself and Dopinder (Karan Soni's driver character), and some of the things we found and saw along the route. It was not intended to be an event film. If we're on our way to Point C, it was only supposed to get us to Point B. That was the strangest one. I enjoyed it. Ryan said, "I thought it was fun."

Ryan Reynolds first appeared as Deadpool in Tim Miller's eponymous 2016 film. In 2018, he released David Leitch's Deadpool 2, the sequel to the original. However, Disney immediately acquired 21st Century Fox, jeopardising Deadpool 3's future release. "I wasn't sure if I would ever play Deadpool again. It's not something I would have said in public, but I wasn't sure how a figure like that would fit into that environment (Marvel Cinematic Universe)," Ryan explained.

About Deadpool 3

However, as fate would have it, Deadpool 3 turned out to be the franchise's most successful installment, including Hugh Jackman as Wolverine. The actor, who said goodbye to the legendary character in James Mangold's 2017 blockbuster Logan, will now return as Wolverine in Deadpool 3. Shawn Levy directs, having previously collaborated with Ryan on Free Guy (2021) and The Adam Project (2022).

In the film, the Time Variance Authority (TVA) summons Deadpool from his calm life and sends him on a mission with Wolverine that will affect the course of the MCU. Emma Corrin, Matthew MacFayden, Karan Soni, Aaron Stanford, and Jennifer Garner round out the cast of Deadpool & Wolverine. Deadpool & Wolverine, produced by Kevin Feige for Marvel Studios, is set to open in theatres on July 26.
