Kangana Ranaut: Lesser known facts

According to a Mumbai Mirror report, the biopic of Tragedy Queen, Meena Kumari, will star Kangana Ranaut in the lead role. The actress was given a copy of the book and she found it "absolutely riveting," stated the report. "Kangana is looking at her date diary and is hoping to accommodate the film in August-September. The research has begun and a formal announcement will be made soon," the report quoted a source.

Kangana has previously played an '80s star in Milan Luthria's Once Upon A Time in Mumbaai, while her character in Mohit Suri's Woh Lamhe was inspired by actress Parveen Babi. However, playing Meena will be a challenge as the film will explore the actress' rise, the men in her life and her struggle to cope with fame which resulted in an alcohol addiction which led to her death at the age of 39, the report concluded.

Kangana Ranaut is currently a top-notch actress, however there is a story behind how the actress left home to pursue her aspirations. According to an interview in Bombay Times, Kangana Ranaut had revealed that she was studying science at a hostel in Chandigarh when she came in touch with art and culture. The interview further quoted Kangana as saying that she would cry seeing someone in pain and felt that science, as a field, was not meant for her. She apparently wanted to quit her education and pursue sculpting. According to the Bombay Times report when her father slapped her for the first time at the age of 15, she retorted saying that if you slap me, I will slap you back.

According to a Bombay Times report, after a showdown with her father, Kangana Ranaut was asked to leave the house and the actress obeyed and left without any money. The journey there onwards was not as easy for her. The report quoted Kangana as saying that she lived with her best friend, Jaspreet, who was elder to her by ten years. She started off with modeling and also did theatre with the Asmita theatre group. The report further quoted Kangana Ranaut as stating that she did everything she could do for food and shelter.

A Bombay Times report quoted Kangana Ranaut as saying that while she was staying alone her father came and gave her Rs 50,000 so that she could take care of herself. However, Kangana did not accept the money and feels that it was one of the most damaging things that scarred her relationship with her father.

Kangana Ranaut landed her first acting job by replacing another actress, Chitrangada Singh. While on The Anupam Kher Show - Kucch Bhi Ho Sakta Hai, Kangana revealed the story being being cast as the leading lady in Gangster. Kangana said, "At that time Hazaaron Khwaishein Aisi had just released and the Bhatts had signed Shiney Ahuja for the role. They felt I was very young for the role as they wanted someone older, hence they signed Chitrangada. However one day, Anurag Basu desperately gave me a call as they wanted to go on outdoor shoot and Chitrangada was not answering their calls. I think it was at that time that she decided to quit movies, and I got Gangster. He said we will apply makeup and make you look older."

Kangana Ranaut took a bold step with Gangster and shot for a kissing scene with Emraan Hashmi. Apparently, her father did not react positively to it. In an interview with Bombay Times, Kangana Ranaut revealed that her father did not talk to her after watching the film because of the kissing scene, and even her grandfather messaged her and asked her to drop the surname. Kangana further stated in the interview that she loved her father and if there was one thing that she wanted to change in the past, it was to accept the money that her father had come to give her, because then even he would have been a part of her success today.

There has never been an easy way out to make it big in Bollywood and there was a point when Kangana was struggling. Speaking to Bombay Times, Kangana Ranaut confessed that she went through a difficult time when she came to Mumbai and that she was badly treated and was misunderstood. Even the success of Gangster couldn't make much of a difference to her career as the actress had no work for two years. Kangana stated that she had decided to pack her bags and run away to live a life of anonymity.

In an interview with Bombay Times, Kangana Ranaut spoke about her strong emotional bond with sister Rangoli, who was a victim of an unfortunate acid attack. Kangana was quoted as saying that she looked after Rangoli and got her treated at the best places. The report further stated that when Kangana did not have work, she would cut ribbon and earn money to take care of her sister.

Kangana Ranaut was applauded for her performance in Madhur Bhandarkar's Fashion. While the film did not feature her in the leading role, she played a vital character. Kangana revealed that she never wanted to do the film. The actress said, "I didn't want to do Fashion because I had done title roles. But I worked hard for the role, I learnt how to cook, did research for my drug addict scenes, understood the withdrawal symptoms, perfected my catwalk. My graph was coming down and I knew it was my last chance. Fashion definitely was a turning point." While she was initially not keen on the character, it was Fashion which won the actress a national award.

Kangana Ranaut has been in the industry for less than a decade but has a whole lot of successful films to her credit. However, Kangana is apparently not a fan of films. According to a report on Rediff.com, Kangana Ranaut finds watching films tiring and has seen only ten films till date. The actress doesn't like to watch television either. The report further stated that Kangana prefers to read books and listen to music over watching movies.
