Sunny Leone tries hard to better Deepika Padukone’s women empowerment video

The Ek Paheli Leela actress recently released a video which showcased her version of feminism…
Sunny Leone is the sex-symbol men in our country worship! Case in point: The ex-adult film star was the most searched celebrity online last year, heck she beat our Prime Minister in that race. She is quickly becoming the queen of all things kinky, raunchy and racy in Bollywood. But looks like Sunny is craving for a change!

In honour of April Fool’s Day, the Ek Paheli Leela actress released a fake wardrobe malfunction video of herself. Now before you zoom off looking for that video on Google, check out the malfunction video right here…

Well, all the viewers must be expecting this video to have some skin show but Sunny calls them out on their “sleaze” and even asks them to “Start looking at women differently”. I am all for the concept behind this video. It advocates against gender stereotyping and calls for stopping objectification of women. By luring in the debauched with it’s sensational title, this video even manages to call the “tharkis” out on what they generally expect of the ex-pornstar.

But I have a question for Sunny. If you want to be looked at differently, why don’t you take a break from the genre of movies you’ve been doing ever since you stepped into the film industry? The world will perceive you the way you want to be perceived. Going by Ms Leone’s filmography I feel like she wants to be perceived as a seductress, or a sexy siren who will ruffle your sheets in your dirtiest dreams.

Does Sunny want to be looked at in a non-objectified light? Perhaps. But what has she actively done to achieve that change apart from this malfunction video? Nothing at all!

I remember watching Sunny at the Splistvilla Season 7 launch saying that she is a dorky person and she would like the world to see that side of her. I recently read somewhere that the ex Penthouse Pet of the year thinks she will be looked at differently after Ek Paheli Leela. But to be honest I don’t see Sunny making any effort to change her image with the Indian masses.

What did I see Sunny do instead? Well, she signed Ragini MMS2 which was all about sex, then she did the Babydoll video which objectified her, after that she signed Mastizaade which is a sex comedy banking on Sunny’s bikini bod and most recently I watched the Kuch Kuch Locha Hai trailer which has a pot-bellied Ram Kapoor lusting after the “sexy” Sunny! Is any of this going to help people look at her differently? I guess not.

At this point I want to clarify that I don’t think Sunny shouldn’t be respected in our country. In my opinion, she is one of the bravest actresses as she openly embraced her past profession before making one bomb of a career in Bollywood. And I love that she is SO sexy! She knows how to flaunt her sexiness with elan and she is rightfully one of the most desired women because she is gorgeous. But in my opinion, if Sunny needs people to look at her as more than just “tits and ass” she’ll have to break away from the brand of films she has been doing. Another film which Sunny shaking her booty in a studded lingerie set will not help her case.

Being an advocate for women equality is in vogue (pun intended.) It’s exciting how more and more Bollywood actresses are joining the brigade of calling sexism out in YouTube videos. But I want to add that the same divas NEED to do more than just feature in trendy videos about women empowerment. They probably should sign films which would further the cause of feminism. They should probably use their star status to reach out to the oppressed women in the interiors of this country instead of using the same to just promote yet another mindless masala movie. In my opinion, they should be sexy as hell but also make diverse filmy choices which shows that they are not just uni-dimensional objects of desire and there is more to them than their “hot-bod”.

Maybe Sunny’s upcoming film Ek Paheli Leela doesn’t just over-sexualize her and actually turns out to be a sensible film which has Sunny doing more than just strip for eyeball-grabbing purposes. Maybe. There is always hope!
