WHILE PIKU SHINES AT THE BOX OFFICE, THINGS ARE LOOKING BLEAK FOR BOMBAY VELVET
Director Shoojit Sircar's Piku is steam-rolling through the Indian box office with business of over Rs 60 crores since it released on May 8.
Trade analyst Taran Adarsh tweeted:
Fri 3.10 cr, Sat 5.10 cr, Sun 6.40 cr, Mon 2.60 cr, Tue 2.20 cr. Grand total: ₹ 60.82 cr. India biz. SMASH HIT!
The film stars Amitabh Bachchan as the hypochondriac Bhashkor Banerjee, Deepika Padukone as his daughter Piku, and Irrfan Khan as taxi service owner Rana Chaudhary
Who can stop the onward march of Piku, also Bollywood's best performer abroad this year? Certainly not Anurag Kashyap's Bombay Velvet for which things are looking bleak at the box office.
The period piece, starring Ranbir Kapoor and Anushka Sharma, opened in more theatres than Piku did but has performed dismally since releasing on May 22:
#BombayVelvet Fri 5.20 cr, Sat 5.10 cr, Sun 5.80 cr, Mon 2.10 cr. Total: ₹ 18.20 cr. India biz.
This Friday's Tanu Weds Manu Returns, starring Kangana Ranaut and Madhavan, is hoping to give Bollywood a third hit after Akshay Kumar's Gabbar Is Back and Piku.
