Second Hand Husband is a poor joke

It is hard to make sense of the protagonist's logic in Second Hand Husband. So ridiculous it is that you want to believe it is a poor joke.

It is hard to make sense of the protagonist's logic in Second Hand Husband. So ridiculous it is that you want to believe it is a poor joke. That in turn would be a fitting way to describe the film itself.

Meet Rajbir (Gippy Grewal) whose problem is that he needs to save the Rs 15,000 alimony so as to marry his current girlfriend, Gurpreet (Tina Ahuja), a not-so-smart lawyer. Instead of looking for a better-paid job or even seeking a raise at his current job as a hotel manager, Rajbir looks for suitors for his ex-wife, Neha (Geeta Basra), and later tries to break up his boss's (Dharmendra) marriage. Simply put, Rajveer will do the silliest things and come across as selfish in his justified pursuit of love.

Rajbir isn't the only one who comes across as a loony toon. Tina Ahuja's face here is so heavily doused in make-up that it's hard to believe that she is a lawyer and not an employee at a MAC store. (She even wears a locket saying Princess.) It's disconcerting and unfunny to watch Dharmendra play drunk throughout, talk nonsense and hit on women half his age. The only person who walks out of this film with some dignity is Vijay Raaz. He is inspector Rakesh, who wants to remarry and has a young snarky son who takes jibes at his desperation. The few moments of fun come mostly due to his mock-serious act and great comic timing.

The social commentary of the film is even more troubling. A divorcee should look for ways to get out of paying alimony. A husband will save his marriage by lying to his wife and then shamelessly get back to his old cheating ways. A girlfriend should encourage her boyfriend to mess up other people's lives so that she can live happily ever after.

It doesn't take long for writers to run out of ideas on a flimsy premise. There are only so many laughs than one can draw from the foolishness and morally- depraved ways of the characters. Even the foreseeable, crowd-pleasing cameo towards the end can't save this film. Govinda's daughter Tina Ahuja will hope to be second-time lucky because Second Hand Husband is not the smashing Bollywood debut she would have wanted.
