ast: Arnold Schwarzenegger, Jason Clarke, Emilia Clarke, Jai Courtney, Lee Byung-hun, JK Simmons
Direction: Alan Taylor
Rating: 4 Star Rating:
He's back, and he's a burn-out this time around.
Arnold Schwarzenegger's cyborg circus returns for a fifth helping of box-office bounty, but after all the hype the new film disappoints. Terminator Genisys hardly takes forward the franchise anywhere beyond where it was in 1984, when the first film of the series redefined sci-fi mayhem. The film suffers from a classic malady that often plagues Hollywood sequels. It really has nothing new to offer and tries hiding that fact with hardsell hype and polished packaging.
The plot, set in 2029 and oscillating in time cycles, would confuse most. Briefly, the war between man and machine rages on. John Connor (Jason Clarke), leader of the human resistance, sends Kyle Reese (Jai Courtney) back to 1984 to protect Sarah Connor (Emilia Clarke). A fracture in timeline, however, alters the past in which Reese lands. He must now take the help of the Guardian (Schwarzenegger) to set things right.
Cliched franchise sequels are often redeemed by imaginative storytelling. Terminator Genisys tries doing so by adding too many twists in the tale. Only, you realise the film moves on for around two hours without actually serving anything new. It is time to terminate the series.
