Bollywood traditionally revolves its action films around male protagonists. One seldom sees a leading lady not just kicking butt but also picking up the mantle to have the entire story revolve around her. In that aspect, it was a challenge no less for Sonakshi Sinha to come on board for Akira. Considering the fact that she has scored hits from Dabangg to Holiday where films have primarily been set around Salman Khan and Akshay Kumar, it was always going to be a game changer moment for Sonakshi Sinha if she ever decided to be a part of a film where the very title was based on her character’s name.
It was a tricky proposition for Akira to find an audience for itself, more so since it was more of a drama in the offering that also turned grim and dark in the second half. From that perspective, it did well for itself to still bring in 16.65 crore over the weekend. Unlike a Neerja which had the biopic factor going for it or a Mary Kom which was a more rounded up commercial affair, Akira had vengeance as the theme with Sonakshi as the only notable name (with of course Anurag Kashyap stepping in as the villain).
The start has been fair for Akira as the economics are in control for the film which is budgeted at 30 crore (including P&A). Weekdays would hold the key though for the eventual outcome that the film enjoys before Baar Baar Dekho arrives on the coming Friday.
Note: All collections as per production and distribution sources
