Sushant Singh Rajput-starrer MS Dhoni: The Untold Story, which recently made its way to the 200-crore-club, has now raced ahead of Akshay Kumar's Rustom and Airlift to become the second highest grosser of 2016 so far.

Neeraj Pandey's directorial hit the screens on September 30, and has been impressed the masses and critics alike. On its way to become the most successful biopic, the film has earned Rs 129.50 crore in the domestic market.

The film zoomed ahead of Rustom and Airlift, which had netted Rs 127.42 crore and Rs 129 crore respectively in India, to become the second highest grosser of the year, only second to Salman Khan's Sultan.

Sultan smashed box office records to reach the 100-crore mark in just 3 days. The film went on to gross Rs 584 crore worldwide by the end of its run.

"We are thrilled that MS Dhoni... has become the second highest grossing movie of 2016. The combination of Brand Dhoni, Sushant's excellence in portraying the living legend and Neeraj Pandey's direction, have led to this success. This is overwhelming love for Dhoni and the film, we are grateful to the fans and audiences for this," Vijay Singh, CEO, Fox Star Studios said.
