Independence Day special: Amrita Rao: I want freedom from religious intolerance, rape, and cheats

No matter where we are or how we are, Independence Day fills us with patriotic fervor and enthusiasm. Over the years, Bollywood too has encompassed patriotism through films of several genres. This year as we sit back at home and ponder over things that matter, ETimes exclusively asked Amrita Rao about the things that she wants independence from on this Independence Day.

Excerpts from the interview... Following are the things that Amrita Rao wants our country free of on this Independence Day:

Firstly, she says she wants independence from those people who judge others on the basis of their religion. She said, “I think human beings turn their silliest self when they try to convince and many times even brainwash another about their own religion and way of praying or approaching God being better than the others.”

Elaborating further, she added, “If you truly believe in God and his wisdom then realise and respect the variety in his creation where everyone has a different skin colour, different language for communication and own variety in cuisine similarly a different religious approach to God. God plans the variety to make this world interesting until your last breath. Why let one mad man's ego ridden and selfish political and money-making agenda use religion to kill it for the human race in the larger picture.” Secondly, she says she wants independence from both women and men being subjected to rape in this world. She said, “I can never fathom how a man who is developed cell by cell in a woman's body can grow up to being so insensitive to another woman's body and self-respect!”

Elaborating further she added, “I often wonder how his relation and rapport with his mother or his mother's personality and rapport with him must be? What is the psychology of a rapist? Rape happens not to the body but to the deepest essence of one's soul. There is no justification of any kind for this act.”

Thirdly, she says she wants independence from people not paying people who have worked for them. She said, “This is a huge menace going on in almost every industry and also in the society in by and large. In the film industry and moreover, in the TV industry it's a rampant issue where producers cold-heartedly deny payment to artists despite being covered from the Channel already and despite knowing how the medium slogs the better of the artists. Powerful producers use influence to shut all doors of justice to an artist and harass them mentally and emotionally. Denying payment is a huge trigger to mental health issues in society as well.”

Further, she added, “I have never ever understood this concept of committing and then not paying or even delaying payments for that matter to anyone who has worked for me.

Karma hits back I believe firmly.”
