Batman v Superman beats Rocky Handsome

Friday past saw the release of two action films, namely Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice and Rocky Handsome. It also marked the beginning of the second week of Kapoor & Sons in theatres.

While both films started out strong, Batman v Superman garnered the bigger numbers, considering the immense anticipation and pre-release buzz. The film, earning Rs 3.80 crore from paid previews on Thursday, launched into Friday with great opening numbers and a total of Rs 8.10 crore added to the kitty. The film saw barely any change in figures on Saturday and earned Rs 8 crore. Sadly, the negative reviews and the all-important India v Australia match in the ICC T20 World Cup impacted the figures for Sunday as the film collected Rs 6.90 crore.

With a first weekend total of Rs 26.80 crore, Batman v Superman has a tough week ahead considering the waning excitement for the film, the litmus test being how it fares today at the ticket windows.

Rocky Handsome, on the other hand, got off to a rocky start. With Rs 1.77 crore in hand from paid previews on Thursday, the film, released in 1900 screens, earned Rs 5.39 crore on Friday, cashing in on the long weekend advantage. But come Saturday, figures plummeted as the film collected Rs 4.83 crore after a 10 per cent drop. And it didn't get any better for the John Abraham starrer on Sunday as it earned Rs 4.13 crore.

With a first weekend total of Rs 16.12 crore, Rocky Handsome is likely to face an uphill struggle to earn through the week, considering its competition and the not-so favourable reviews.

Kapoor & Sons, which started its second week run on Friday, continued to maintain its rock steady performance. Witnessing less than a 50 per cent drop on Friday, the film collected Rs 4.21 crore. Figures remained uniform on Saturday with Rs 4.24 crore added to the kitty. Collections saw a slight hit on Sunday, with Rs 3.64 crore in earnings, owing to the ongoing T20 World Cup.

Having earned Rs 12.09 crore in its second weekend and with Rs 59.02 crore in domestic earnings so far, Kapoor & Sons is looking at a healthy total of Rs 25 crore by the end of the second week. International markets have responded well to the film, with Rs 28.07 crore in earnings so far, which takes the worldwide earnings for the film up to Rs 87.09 crore.
