Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice Movie Review

Director: Zack Snyder
Cast: Ben Affleck, Henry Cavill, Amy Adams, Gal Gadot, Jeremy Irons, Jesse Eisenberg

When a film like Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice claims it'll have you witness "The Greatest Gladiator Match in the history of the world," you do somewhat get your hopes up. But when that grest Gladiator match turns to cheesiness and mush, you feel short-changed, to say the least.

Director Zack Snyder's attempt to bring the two DC superheroes into the same frame and possibly show the beginnings of the Justice League doesn't tell you much you don't already know if you've followed the franchises even with a feigned interest. Batman is an orphan. Superman is from another planet and was raised by people in Smallville. Batman is billionaire and ladies man Bruce Wayne. Superman is the journalist Clark Kent, who could go to any length and any corner of the earth to save his lady love, Lois Lane. And each starts to question the other's moral objective, responsibility and modus operandi to find justice. And that (spoiler alert) both their mothers are named Martha. The element that ties them all together is Alexander 'Lex' Luthor (Eisenberg) who's a snazzy looking version of a mad scientist, genius and rich businessman up to no good.

To be honest, there's no major plot points you're looking for here, because chances are you'll spend the whole first half trying to keep up and make sense of the almost random events. The action is great but none of the portions draw you in, save for moments with Wonder Woman in the climax. There are plenty of close, macro shots to heighten the excitemnet and a lot of moments where either Batman or Superman, or even Wonder Woman (Gal Gadot) appear on screen that could make you go 'woohoo.' But aside from a fabulous job by both Gadot and Jesse Eisenberg, there isn't enough to meet your expectations, let alone exceed them. Jeremy Irons adds a level of charm as Alfred and we just wish we saw more of him. While this is Henry Cavill's second outing as Superman, this was a first for Ben Affleck as the Dark Knight and with a heavy heart, we must admit - he's no Batman.

Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice is recommended only so you can end the almost three-year long wait to find out what happens in the epic collision, but unfortunately for nothing more than that.
